How to Change Your Porsche 911 Oil — Complete Guide
Step-by-step guide to changing the oil in your Porsche 911. Covers 996, 997, 991, and 992 models with recommended oils, filters, and torque specs.
Overview
Changing the oil on your Porsche 911 is one of the most fundamental maintenance tasks you can perform. Regular oil changes keep your flat-six engine running smoothly and extend its lifespan significantly.
What You'll Need
- 9 quarts of Mobil 1 0W-40 (or Porsche-approved equivalent)
- OEM oil filter (Mahle or Mann)
- New drain plug washer
- Drain pan
- Basic socket set
Step 1: Prepare Your Vehicle
Warm up the engine for 5 minutes. This ensures the oil flows freely and carries contaminants out with it. Raise the vehicle on jack stands or use a lift.
Step 2: Drain the Oil
Locate the drain plug on the bottom of the engine. Place your drain pan underneath and remove the plug using a 17mm socket. Allow all oil to drain completely — this takes about 10 minutes.
Step 3: Replace the Filter
Remove the old oil filter using your filter wrench. Apply a thin coat of fresh oil to the gasket of the new filter. Install hand-tight, then turn an additional 3/4 turn.
Step 4: Refill
Replace the drain plug with a new washer and torque to 45 Nm. Add oil through the filler cap — start with 8 quarts, then check the level.
Step 5: Check and Run
Start the engine and let it idle for 2 minutes. Check for leaks around the drain plug and filter. Turn off the engine, wait 5 minutes, and check the oil level on the dipstick.
